Why learn ‘Whole Numbers in Years 7 and Integers in Year 8’?
Consider you are heading to the checkout with two $18 T-shirts and a $65 pair of jeans. Will $100 be enough to pay for them?
If you swim 12 laps of a 50 metre pool 4 times a week, how many metres a week is that?
Therefore, working confidently with numbers means more than just one’s ability to use the four operations (add, subtract, multiply and divide). It means being able to choose which skill to use, to estimate and round numbers, and to have a range of mental skills to use so that one can work things out efficiently and accurately.
