Successful Pig Showing at Quirindi Show

W_pig showing (6)

A small but dedicated team of students represented the Coonbarabran High School Berkshire Stud at Quirindi Show last term.

The students were Grace Gordon, Artemis Pech, Hayley Bartlett-Birrell and Jacob Bandman. These students were out numbered by the 6 Berkshire gilts which all had to be washed and groomed early on Friday morning in preparation for the judging. As novices to pig showing this was no small feat for the students or the pigs. (See slideshow below)

The next activity for these novices was Junior Judging, competing against older students from Quirindi High, Grace did well to achieve a 6th place. Next was the parading competition in which Artemis placed 3rd overall.

Finally, onto the pig classes. After much deliberation by the judge CHS Sapphire, shown by Artemis, placed as Champion Junior Female as well as Reserve Champion Female of the show. Sapphire was narrowly beaten for overall female champion by a Senior Landrace sow in pig. This is a fine achievement for a gilt of only just 6 months old!  The judge commented on the high standard and recommended we consider showing at the Sydney Royal. You never know your luck in the big city!!
