NSW Premier’s Junior Debating Competition

On Wednesday 22nd June, Coonabarabran High School hosted Coonamble High for the second round in the NSW Premier’s Junior Debating Competition.

Although it was the second round in the competition, for Coonabarabran it was to be the debut debate for its junior debating team, made up of Jordan Dicks, Amy Maher, Molly Shannon and Lachlan Eshman. The topic for the debate was a controversial one for the students: should social media be banned for persons under the age of 18? Coonabarabran took the negative, arguing that the benefits of connecting to others through social media far outweighed the potential damage.  Coonabarabran countered Coonamble’s arguments well, but in the end victory was awarded to Coonamble. Both teams enjoyed the debate and it proved a valuable learning experience to carry the Coona team forward into the next round later this year.
